Senior Ruby Engineer (Gaming Industry)

Our mission is to make learning fun, engaging, and accessible for K–6 students everywhere.We’re looking for a Senior Ruby Engineer to join our team and help build out our teacher-facing Learning Management System (LMS).

This is a unique opportunity to work across backend and frontend, partnering closely with our product and design teams to create a platform that teachers love and students benefit from.

Responsibilities:

  • Engineer the LMS: Design, develop, and maintain scalable Ruby on Rails applications.
  • Build Beautiful Interfaces: Develop and optimize responsive front-end features using JavaScript, HTML, CSS, and modern frameworks.
  • Own the Design System: Set up and maintain a reusable component library (Lookbook or equivalent), implement design tokens, and manage theme files for scalable, consistent styling.
  • Partner with Designers: Translate UI/UX assets into production-ready components with accessibility (WCAG/ARIA) and performance in mind.
  • Optimize Performance: Architect front-end and back-end solutions that are fast, reliable, and scalable.
  • Handle the Data Layer: Manage and optimize schemas, migrations, and queries for large-scale relational databases (PostgreSQL/MySQL).
  • Infrastructure & CI/CD: Support AWS deployments, caching (Redis/Memcached),queuing (Sidekiq/Resque), and automated CI/CD workflows.
  • Debug & Monitor: Implement robust logging, error tracking, and monitoring (New Relic, DataDog, Sentry, Logstash).
  • Collaborate & Lead: Work closely with product managers, designers, and engineers to deliver high-quality features in an agile environment.

Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of professional experience with Ruby on Rails, including major version migrations
  • Strong expertise in front-end development (JavaScript, HTML5, CSS3), with hands-on experience in component libraries (Storybook/Lookbook or similar).
  • Proven ability to implement and maintain design tokens, theming, and scalable CSS/JS architecture.
  • Familiarity with accessibility standards and best practices.
  • Experience building responsive UIs and reusable, performant front-end components.
  • Solid background in database design, optimization, and query performance tuning.
  • Hands-on experience with AWS services, caching, queuing, and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Strong debugging, problem-solving, and communication skills.
  • Bonus: Experience in gaming or interactive web applications.
