The Best Math App for 3rd Graders, Sorted by What You Actually Need

Third grade is the year math stops being arithmetic, and several of the apps recommended for it are still arithmetic apps. They are good at what they do. What they do is about a quarter of the grade.

So this list sorts by job instead of by rank: three categories, what each is for, and how to tell which one the student in front of you needs.

What does third grade math actually ask for?

Four things, and only one of them is multiplication facts. The Common Core grade 3 introduction names four critical areas for the year: "(1) developing understanding of multiplication and division and strategies for multiplication and division within 100; (2) developing understanding of fractions, especially unit fractions (fractions with numerator 1); (3) developing understanding of the structure of rectangular arrays and of area; and (4) describing and analyzing two-dimensional shapes" (Common Core, Grade 3 introduction).

Read that list again with an app in mind. Area, fractions and shape analysis are three of the four, and they are the three that drill software historically skips.

The fractions standard is the clearest case. Grade 3 does not ask students to compute with fractions. It asks them to "understand a fraction as a number on the number line" and to explain equivalence "by reasoning about their size" (3.NF). Area works the same way: students tile rectangles to connect area to multiplication, then meet the standard that separates understanding from a formula, "exhibiting rectangles with the same perimeter and different areas or with the same area and different perimeters" (3.MD). Both are conceptual demands, and a flashcard engine has nowhere to put either one. A student can know every multiplication fact and still not see why two rectangles with the same perimeter differ in size.

Then 3.OA.D.8: "solve two-step word problems using the four operations," and assess whether the answers are reasonable (3.OA). Two steps. That is where a lot of third graders come apart, and it is not a facts problem.

Fluency still matters. By the end of the year students should "know from memory all products of two one-digit numbers." It is one of four priorities, though, and an app that only serves it leaves the other three to you.

Category 1: apps that build fact fluency and stop there

These do one job well and make no claim on the rest of the grade. Worth having when a student's gap is automaticity, not understanding.

XtraMath covers the four operations on a "10 minutes a day" model and gives teachers reports "showing each student's accuracy, speed, and fluency level for every operation" (XtraMath). Free for teachers and families, with paid premium reporting. If the whole problem is a student still counting up to find 7 × 6, this beats anything broader.

Monster Math is worth looking at carefully, because it appears on a lot of third-grade lists and its own curriculum page tells a narrower story. It covers "Grades K–3 (about ages 5–9)" and describes itself as "K–3 math fact fluency, from number sense through multiplication" (Monster Math). Its published curriculum lists grade 3 as multiplication strategies: repeated addition, the commutative property, facts of 2, 5 and 10, doubling, adding and removing a group (Monster Math curriculum). Reading the full list, there is no fractions content, no area, no perimeter, no multi-step word problems. It costs $59.99 a year after a seven-day trial.

Category 2: programs that cover the whole grade

These serve all four critical areas and record what happened. This is the category you want if the app will carry assigned practice across a year.

DoodleMath is "standards-aligned online math practice designed by teachers for kindergarten through 5th grade," covering number, the four operations, fractions, measurement, geometry and patterns (DoodleMath). Coverage is genuinely there. The catch is the business model: it offers "a free version with limited access," and the real product is a subscription that starts with a seven-day trial. Worth a trial, not worth assuming you can run it with 25 students for nothing.

Khan Academy: the main site covers grade 3 fully, free, with no paid tier at all. It is video and exercises rather than a game, so it suits students who are already willing. One caution, because the two products get confused constantly: Khan Academy Kids is not a third-grade option. Khan's own help center says its activities are "aligned to standards for grades Pre-K through 2nd grade," and that a child in "3rd grade or above" needs a separate account on the main site (Khan Kids support).

Category 3: the apps with "3rd Grade" in the title

These are consumer app-store products, and the grade in the name is a search term, not a curriculum audit. Some cover the right topics. Almost none have a classroom layer.

The one that surfaces most often is "3rd Grade Math: Fun Kids Games" from Visual Math Interactive. Its listing covers the right ground on paper: multiplication and division, place value, fractions, measurement, area and perimeter, shapes. It is free with in-app purchases. Two things the listing also shows: no teacher dashboard, roster or class reporting.

So which one does your third grader need?

Work down this list and stop at the first yes.

  1. The gap is only fact recall. A fluency specialist beats a broad program here, and XtraMath is free.
  2. The gap is fractions, area or two-step problems. Category 2. A fluency app will not touch it no matter how long the student plays.
  3. You need to assign practice and see results without building a spreadsheet. Category 2 again, and specifically one with a teacher dashboard, which rules out most of category 3.
  4. You want something a student will open without being asked. Engagement becomes the deciding variable, and the programs differ enormously on it.
