Math Warm-Ups Ranked: What to Do With the First 5 Minutes

Most warm-ups spend the first five minutes on yesterday's worksheet. Here are five opening routines ranking, largely based on how much student reasoning you actually hear per minute you spend.

First, the three seconds that decide whether any of this works

After asking a question, teachers typically wait somewhere between one and one and a half seconds before filling the silence themselves (Kent State CTL). Push that pause to three seconds or more, and the change in what comes back is not subtle. Student answers get "lengthier (by more than 300 percent); more often evidence-based; cognitively more complex; and more frequently correct," and students who rarely volunteer become considerably more likely to answer (Sattes & Walsh, ASCD, citing Rowe 1986 and Tobin 1987). The recommendation is three to five seconds in two places: after you ask, and again after a student finishes.

1. Number strings

Highest thinking per minute of anything you can do in five minutes. You put up a short sequence of related problems where each one helps with the next: 7 × 8, then 14 × 8, then 28 × 8. Students solve mentally, no pencils, then explain how they got there and how the previous problem helped.

These are described as "low-floor/high-ceiling" tasks, which is exactly right (Edutopia): a student who counts by eights can enter, and a student who sees the doubling relationship gets somewhere interesting.

The close relative is the number talk, defined as a "five- to fifteen-minute" conversation around purposefully chosen computation problems solved mentally, aimed at building accuracy, efficiency and flexibility (Parrish, 2011). Note that range. If you only have five minutes, you have room for three problems, honestly two, plus the talk. The most common way this routine fails is trying to fit six.

Best for: grades 2-6, any day you want to hear strategies rather than answers.

2. Which One Doesn't Belong

Four images or four numbers on the board. Which one doesn't belong? The design constraint is that "there isn't a single answer" (Edutopia). Every one of the four can be argued out, and the student's job is the justification, not the pick.

It ranks second because it does something no other routine on this list does as well: it drops the cost of being wrong to zero. There is no wrong answer to defend against, so the students who never raise a hand will raise one. If your class has gone quiet, this is the routine to run for two weeks. It's also the fastest to prepare, which matters at 7:40 in the morning.

Best for: K-6, and especially a class where the same four students do all the talking.

3. Would You Rather

Two options, pick one, defend it. Two slices from a round pizza, or one slice from a 15-by-10-inch sheet pizza (Edutopia).

It ranks below the first two because it's a binary. Students have to commit and justify, which is real mathematical work, but the ceiling is lower than a number string and the conversation tends to converge faster. Excellent once a week. Thinner as a daily habit.

Best for: grades 3-6, and unusually good at pulling in students who like to argue.

4. Notice and Wonder

Put up an image with something mathematical in it and ask what students notice, then what they wonder. You collect the questions and pick one to chase (Edutopia).

The lowest floor on the list by a distance: every student can notice something, which is precisely why it belongs in kindergarten and 1st grade and in the first month of any year, when you're still building the norm that talking about math is safe. It ranks fourth only on the metric of hearing thinking per minute, because a full minute can pass on the color of the cookies before anything mathematical is said. That minute isn't wasted in September. It is a bit wasted in March.

Best for: K-2 year-round, and grades 3-6 for the first few weeks.

5. Spiral review

The most-assigned warm-up in America, ranked last: it tells you who has lost the thread on something you taught three weeks ago, and retrieval genuinely helps things stick.

But it produces the least thinking per minute of anything here, and it's the routine most likely to make the first five minutes feel like a quiz, which is the opposite of the "being wrong is free" window the slot is good for. If you use it, keep it to two problems, take nothing for a grade, and pull from three weeks back rather than yesterday. Yesterday's content isn't review; it's unsupervised practice of something not yet secure.

Best for: once or twice a week, not daily. If you want fluency specifically, a dedicated routine beats a warm-up.

Honorable mention: the independent soft-start

Four of the five routines above need nothing but you, a prompt, and three seconds of silence..

How long should a math warm-up be? Five minutes for most routines, and treat that as a ceiling rather than a target. Number talks are usually described as running five to fifteen minutes (Parrish, 2011), so a genuine five-minute version means two or three problems, not six. The most common failure is a warm-up that quietly grows to twelve minutes and eats the lesson. If a routine consistently runs long, cut the number of problems rather than the discussion, because the discussion is the part doing the work.

What's the difference between a number talk and a math warm-up? A number talk is one specific kind of math warm-up. "Warm-up" is the slot, the first few minutes of the block, and it can hold anything from spiral review to a puzzle. A number talk is a defined routine: students solve a purposefully chosen computation problem mentally, with no pencils, then explain and defend their strategies while the teacher records the thinking. Its aim is accuracy, efficiency and flexibility with numbers (Parrish, 2011), not speed and not coverage.

Pick one routine. Run it every day for a month instead of rotating through all five, because the value compounds once students know the rules and stop hedging. And wait three seconds longer than is comfortable before you call on anyone.
